Best Gay Books!
#1
What are some of the best gay books out there?

I'm talking about respectable gay literature and not any pornographic material.

Brokeback Mountain! (short story, Annie Proulx)
I also recommend anything else by Annie Proulx.
And The Shipping News is a fantastic book of hers with a gay character in it, but that's not the main focus of the story by a long shot.

But yer. Brokeback Mountain.

I also remember a book called "Querelle" and another called "Antoninus" both of which I enjoyed

The Swimming Pool Library by Alan Hollinghurst (author of other gay themed novels including The Line of Beauty)
Faggots by Larry Kramer

both books, rather gripping and ripping reads.

One of the best is called 'Holding the Man' by Timothy Conigrave. It's by an Australian author, but pretty much every gay guy in Australia loves it. Order it in at your local, it's worth it.

At Swim, Two Boys, by Jamie O'Neill. I haven't read it yet, but it's on my list as is Adam Mars-Jones' new novel, "Pilcrow".

A couple of weeks ago I read "Comfort and Joy" by Jim Grimsley. Lightweight, but nicely written. The Alan Hollinghurst novels that Albert mentioned can be quite dark, but I throughly recommend them. If anyone has a gay younger brother you could do a lot worse than look up the stories of Brent Hartinger for them for Christmas. I thoroughly enjoyed The Geography Club when I read it ... and the author replies personally to e-mails.

Perhaps this would be a good time to plug one of my favourite bookshops, Gay's the Word, in Marchmont Street, London. When I'm on my way back to Norfolk from spending time with Albert I try to visit and spend a little money there if I'm passing through London. Their fiction list is on http://freespace.virgin.net/gays.theword/g_fict.htm

Unlike many, I do my browsing on Amazon and buy from GTW, even if they do have to charge full price. Jim at the shop is incredibly knowledgeable and has never let me down when I've asked him for recommendations.

'My Side of The Story' by Will Davis is brillo pads, i ♥ it. Also 'Boy Meets Boy' slightly cheesy as the name suggests but a good one. 'How I Paid For College' is muy excellente, y grasioso.
