I agree with everything that's been said here. And I think that your partner is being unrealistic. I don't know about vet care in your country - but I had an aging cat with health problems who had to go in every 6 months, and the typical bill was close to $500. per visit. Even routine care is very high, as is food. I won't repeat what everyone has said about how cruel it would be to keep a large dog in a confined space, it's a no-brainer.
Maybe you should let your partner read this thread - maybe hearing the opinions of others will help him realize that you're not being unreasonable.

Ask your landlord if you're allowed to have a dog in the appartment.
I wanted us to have a german shepherd, but my husbear's sister was running a dog pensionate and she just so happened to be having a dog in need of a new home, it was a 3 year old black cocker spaniel. So that's how we got our dog. Not what I had in mind. Not what he had in mind. But 3 years later we've loved her since!! A bit too much even. Space was not an issue for us though, but considering our families living away and us wanting to drive around visiting other countries and family abroad a small dog fits in the cage in the back of the stationcar, which you are required to have (by Danish law) when transporting a dog.
Having a pet is expensive, yeah, but worth every penny in my opinion. We didn't raise the puppy though and that's what really requires alot of time and alot of money (mostly for vaccines!).

One of the reasons I don't have a pet now is I'm in a small apartment, and I don't think it's fair to have an animal in this place.
Another reason is I have to get permission 4 months in advance of getting a pet.

I think the idea of finding a more suitable place to have a dog is a great one.It may be possible or it may be that he will realize that the cost is not reasonable.
In the meantime,is there a shelter where he could volunteer so that he could be around animals. He would probably enjoy it and it may expose him to enough reality to have him seek a reasonable solution.

We can't find other living place just because of a pet. We're lucky to have this one with a rent so low. I won't say that we're poor, but after we've paid the rent and bought something to eat, that's about it with our money.
The owner of our flat agrees upon an animal, I called her yesterday. I asked if we could have a pet and she was like "have ten, I don't care".
My boyfriend and me, we had quite serious argument about that yesterday and now he's angry with me.
