That's a good point babe yeah ... AND you've given me something to think about ...

I'm going to start up a new thread about being comfortable being open with your partner in public ... THAT should be interesting .

sort of opening this thread again a bit...
last saturday was the gay pride parade in buenos aires...
i didnt go, but i saw many TV reports from several different channels (of those TV shows that 're-play' what others broadcast the previous day or something like that, i dunno if they're so famous in Europe or USA).
but they only showed brightly coloured drag-queens shrieking loudly... nothing against them, they are part of the whole thing indeed and thats good...
but just a part!!
i got really angry, my dad told me that TV channels show that in order to raise ratings... it would be drastically boring to show a couple of gays that resemble 'normal people' (put it between commas because of the subjective meaning of the word normal), that's what the audience DOESN'T want... those images of costumed drag queens create stereotypes TOWARDS gays... who are 'thrown inside the same bag'.
i think that what we gays need as a better step forward towards acceptation is a better mass media covering of matters of our REAL interest and that can show to the community what our real aims, thoughts and considerations are. what do you think can be done?

To be honest ? I kinda agree with your dad ...

Whenever any event is televised or broadcast, one of the main purposes is for the broadcasting body to receive the highest-ratings they can get ...

That's why talk-shows and soap operas and things like that are always so very, very popular - because people love to hate them, and tune-in just to spout their opinions at the television ... (I realise you know this already, so please don't think me patronising xx).

I do, however, also agree with you, in that because it is often the case that gay events (when televised) do focus more on the glamous, flaming drag queens than on the hum-drum ordinary homos, it does give the moral majority a little encouragement to fuel the flames of their malcontent (from "I don't understand why they (homos) need to portray themselves like that ... why can't they just be normal" to considerably less kind words). Many straight people are totally cool with it obviously; many straight people love drag queens and gay parades and stuff like that, as they're so colourful and outgoing ... but they are not the majority.

I think that, to answer your question, broadcasting the image that homosexuals are generally-speaking quite normal people who live quite normal lives comes through, but in subtler ways.

The front page of our local paper a couplea nights ago went on about Jersey having its first-ever gay adoption (as in two gay men adopted a child). Whilst it's sure to cause a mini-backlash, I thought that was some decent coverage of a normal issue that garnered some positive feedback for us as a group ...

So I think it's just really a game of swings and roundabouts ... we win some, and we lose some Confusedmile:, but my view is that anybody that bases their opinion on any race, creed or colour solely on what they read about in the papers, or see on the television, has something significantly wrong with them in the first place ....

sadly that's what they do! most people are stupid... they don't even care
i came up with an idea, there's to publish, once a week and in a relatively popular newspaper, those decent coverage of normal issues, or other kinds of articles...
there's no need to talk again about marriage rights, that's actually a bit boring tbh. We should explain people, for instance, how hard can be to go trough life being gay, the difficulties in adolescent hood, the process of coming out, the social pressure, to give some figures showing people how common the whole matter is, or to publish, exactly as we've been discussing here, the causes of homosexuality (to give different points of view); to tell life-stories; to explain why are we fighting for all those things; to explain that all the 'gay places' are there not because we want to separate ourselves from society, but because it's extremely difficult to be open in straight public places, such as night clubs, bars, or everywhere, and in fact that's because of discrimination...; i dunno, to contact people with all those things that they just can't appreciate by themselves...

wow, how to respond to this. I agree with some of what's been said here and disagree with some. I think that being gay/bi, and I make the distinction because I am Bi, i think its something like race, and should be expressed that way. But here's the thing, why would you make a big deal of race, so why would you make a big deal of sexuality? Maybe its just me, but I don't think it's an issue that anyone who doesn't know me should care about.
