Well, give him a call and go on one date and see what kind of person he is. You could always just pull out when you need to on the first date, but if you are not interested in talking to him, then don't call. You could also just text him and see if you can be good friends? You never know, you may get a nice good friendship out of it.

If I was ever in that situation(which I don't ever expect to be)...I'd be perfectly ok with meeting someone for a movie/lunch/dinner/ even just a walk in the park .. (basically something in a public place so he couldn't 'try anything'/i'd feel safe) That said i'd let him let him know ahead of time it was a "friends only" thing...rather than a 'date' or hookup
