The mortar and pestle are getting to be more and more treasured in today's kitchens. Crushing spices in them frees flavors that a grinder does not. Pesto is a delight unto itself and makes growing your own basil a worthwhile project. Get the kids involved in growing, making it into pesto and freezing it for use moth's later. Then show them how to makes noodles by hand themselves. Beats playing with clay and you get to eat the results.
Simple food is the best stuff going!
