Not books, Mike, ideas. Intellectual interaction in a social matrix nurtured by bound volumes of culture past and present.

Yeah, I know it is passe but it can be fun.

Coffee houses fueled the Enligtenment... It was the connections and passing of ideas in them that moved peoples consciousness.

I am soon to have two cataract operations and then we will go to work on correcting my "reading" vision. I look forward to being able to read more. Being retired presents me with the luxury of a pot of good tea or a glass of brandy next to my best chair and a good book to read. No need to rush. Naps allowed between chapters.

I have read more books in my one lifetime than all my ancestors put together.

One can learn a lot from books IF ONE NOWS HOW TO READ. And by that I don't mean simply scanning words with your eyes, while allowing fleeting imaginary impressions to form in the brain. If not, if you don't know how to truly read, they're at best a lazy man's luxury and at worst, a poor substitute for real living.
