So, if one church can do it, why can't the rest?

In Silicon Valley back in 2008...a lot of the churches broke rank and supported marriage equality...this is the ad they ran...

As people of faith,
We believe all people are made in the image of God.
We believe in loving, faithful and committed relationships.
We affirm everyone's right to the freedom to marry.
We urge you to...VOTE NO ON PROPOSITION 8! *
Don't eliminate marriage for anyone.
*
Following Jesus' call for justice and compassion, this ad is sponsored by the Council of Churches of Santa Clara County Committee Against Proposition 8 and 23 congregations:

Why?

Because there is about 2000 years of tradition to turn our backs on.

2000 years of 'truth' which may not altogether be true but still exists.

The Catholic Church is a perfect example. It is the oldest organized christian church and has all of that doctrine and other trappings it can't just throw away.

To do so sends the message 'we were wrong' and if we were wrong about one thing, then how much more are we wrong about?

Divorce. Used to be people were punished for that by the many churches. It took time, it took a new interpretation of The Holy Bible, but eventually we got to this point where divorce is pretty much perfectly fine - even those God expressed states:

Malachi 2:16
16 "I hate divorce," says the LORD God of Israel, "and I hate a man's covering himself with violence as well as with his garment," says the LORD Almighty. So guard yourself in your spirit, and do not break faith.

There are many ways this passage can be interpreted... Times change, society changes and churches survive on the donations of its parishioners. If the church wished to keep people filling the passing plate, it must bend to the will of its membership.

So the churches slowly dissolve their old strongly held truths and adopt knew ones. Slowly being the key because they know they walk a fine line and if they go to fast with internal change it makes them look exactly like what they really are.

False institutions that serve no other purpose than to be profits. Erm I meant prophets - yes?
