It seems history is going to be made- the first country in the world to pass marriage equality by a voter referendum. Go Ireland! Although I really do not like the idea of human rights being put up to a vote. Your rights should not be dependent on the approval of others.

I am from Ireland, but I live in the north so this doesn't involve me. But what I heard is that this involves changes to the constitution and changes to the constitution need to be agreed on by referendum.

There are no postal votes for this referendum so, apparently, people are flocking back to Ireland from abroad to vote.

Counting starts this morning, Saturday, and results are expected to be in by late afternoon.

I think (although I hope not) that it will be a narrow win for the "No" vote.

Looks as if your right Bookworm:

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-32856232

SKY news is saying that it's 61.21% for and 38.79% against. I'm surprised at the yes percentage but congraatulations Eire. Maybe the day will come when sexual orientation won't even be bothered to be mentioned.

What remains now is what will the Catholic church do? Will they or won't they marry same sex couples?
