What the hell is Microsoft doing now?
#1
They're threatening to lock my spare email account if I don't provide a security code. It's stupid, and I don't believe them when they say it will make it safer, they're just being buttholes again. (No, I'm NOT going to call them "overprotective" as they suggest!)

But the problem is every time it comes up they say check the code in the other email account but it won't let me in to get it (yes I sign out first)! And I told it to send it twice by accident and I got 2 different codes!

I tried random numbers but it didn't work, so I'll try 1 of the 2 codes they sent me next, but I can't get into it right now, it won't let me, it just gives me a useless page that won't let me get into my emails.

I'd ask Microsoft, but I've always gotten stupid answers from them, a meaningless apology that says, "Deal with it" so I'm not even going to bother this time. Really, the ONLY reason I don't say to hell with hotmail and let them lock my accounts while going yahoo or something is because it could cause problems with business contacts...but I may end up deciding its worth it anyway, and I may not have a choice.

Any recommendations for better email accounts?

Or for that matter, what the hell Microsoft is doing now with hotmail? Nobody I've talked IRL has had to deal with this and that makes me nervous...Scared

Microsoft - If it aint broken, fix it till it is!

They recently did away with account linking and now I have to carry even more sensitive information in a small diary wherever I go.

Part of what I do for a living is to research familial histories which involves using sites like findmypast.com. These sites charge for the results unless you use them at a public library.

The solution would seem to be to work more from home and pass the charges on to the the client. My product is already considered a luxury item and I need to keep my prices and fees down as far as possible to remain competitive with the franchises.

I got locked out of one of the hotmail accounts recently but the security code given to allow me to change the password simply wouldn't be recognized, no matter how many times I regenerated it.

I think the only answer is to move accounts, renew business stationary, cards etc, and email customers with the new address - I'm looking upon it as a good reason to contact old and existing customers with a few new offers.

lots of mail services out there. find another.

lets face it email, is important in our lives. If you got a issue bet you could find a pay for situation that gives out less of your private information or dosnt lock you to one email service.

dosnt lock you to one service:
buy a domain name like "MyName.com" at a domain company like goDaddy, or networkSolutions. There quite a few of these companies so shop around. Also there are a few options on the domain name; .com .net .biz Some are US based some are UK, every country has a block of these and more and more are out there it seems.
just park your domain name at networkSolutions, never put up a web site unless you really want one but use the networkSolution's email redirection services. Really efficient and easy to do. I like networkSolutions because they offer "private registration" but this may be offered at other companies as well at a lower cost.
-Botom line is people see "[email protected]" not the real email address [email protected]. You are also not locked to hotmail or gmail and can change it any time w/o anyone knowing.
-You can have different but same addresses too like; "[email protected]" or " [email protected]" All goto the same account [email protected] with out anyone knowing.

running up your own email server at home is possible but is a maintenance night mare. This is a half way solution that gives you options.

Pellaz... while you gave one very good solution... don't you think that telling someone to run their own mail server is a little bit over the top. It's not just the maintenance that is a nightmare... the security that you need to understand and apply is Inferno for someone that have been enslaved with public email accounts such as Hotmail, Gmail, And Yahoo. The first years I ran my first Mailserver and no it wasn't Exchange it was ATN-L Mail Daemon (Which now belongs to Blackberry) - very similar to MS Exchange... I though I was secured but got the very nasty surprise to find out that China, Russia, Nigeria have invaded and took control of the mail server and harvested the LDAP.

To anyone who is not IT... running a mailserver also means, learning firewall configuration, sub-netting network designing and perhaps get a router that can sustains DOS (Denied of service attacks).

Thanks all.

I think I finally made Microsoft happy, I saved the code to my docs and then next when I was asked for it I gave it and it seems to be working normal now...for the moment anyway.

The old account got too spammy but have kept it as it's a business account where people can contact me for that, and because I don't save email addies (as I like to thwart viruses that try to send itself from my account, should my account ever get hijacked) I depend somewhat on people being able to contact me (sure I got records in an addie book, but it's not a perfect system, especially one biz in which I try to provide them some anonymity as advertised).

Since then I moved to a less spammy and more personal account where friends and the like can contact me (the one threatened with being locked)...and what would really suck (or at least be very inconvenient) is it's also the account linked to my YT, GS, etc.

And OL life isn't a major concern, it's necessary at times and somewhat pleasant to come here but the focus of my life is off line. Because of that I don't want to have to jump through a bunch of stupid hoops just so some executives can feel relevant somehow or think they're fooling me in how well protected I am, nor do I want to have to figure out what the hell they're thinking/wanting and whether or not it's legite. I've got enough minor nuisances to look after which are actually unavoidable without someone adding even more.

So here's a question: can I start a g-mail account and transfer all my GS, YT, and the like over to that account without having to start new accounts there as well?

As for GS,you could just edit your email,so yes. I have no idea what YT stands for (Yahoo Talk?),but most probably it works that way as well. Wink

I had Hotmail once. ONCE....thats all it took for me to change it.
All I got was porno getting dumped into my email in boxes and getting attached to my search engine like a virus.

I was told by a "techie guru" that Hotmail has the WORST security of any of the ISP systems out there, so viruses, porn, and everything in between gets loaded and attached thru anybodys Hotmail account.

I had Yahoo for years until they decided to completely fuck everybody over and get rid of ALL links to any kind of customer support. So I went back to AOL.

Everybody laughs at me cause I have AOL, but I have NOT had ANY problems with AOL. Actually never have. So, laugh if you must, but I will have the last laugh, because I dont have to deal with all those problems anymore that Yahoo and Hotmail have now and refuse to do anything about.
