I love how the video is so apocalyptic

Having been in one already and being a sure thing I'll live through many more during my life time if I keep living where I do, I can say there isn't much time to react properly and remember all of this. The earthquake will be done within minutes and all the damage will already be done.

People are also going to be within a russian roulette of reactions here. For some fear paralyzes them and they are as good as a sack of potatoes: i.e. little more than dead weight. Some panic and don't think, etc, etc.

It may very well be a matter of luck and how well your home is built. Mine has endured quite well, some other buildings that were new collapsed, some 100 year old houses are still standing, etc.

Do keep away from glass and from anything that might drop on you (which, lets face it is pretty much everything) and the rest is...I dunno, pray, if you believe in something and wait for it to be done.

If you are in the coast and the earthquake was large enough for you to have trouble balancing or outright can't stay on your feet, then GET THE F*CK OUT OF THERE RIGHT THE F*CK NOW, THE VERY SECOND IT IS OVER. Grab a blanket or warm clothes or something but GET THE F*CK OUT TOWARDS HIGHER GROUND, FAST.

That's it really.

I was in one area near the Oregon border that got hit, but listening to the radio was a waste of time. Any news was about Washington DC, nothing local. And one station got busted because people were trying to call and couldn't get through while they heard requests on the air...turned out the DJ had popped in 13 hours of prerecorded airtime and took the day off.

Those I was with had personal radios of various kinds and were informing each other of landslides, watching the beaches for tsunami (not ON the beach, of course), and things like that, but it was more like a community watch program rather than anything public or governmental (though I'm sure emergency services did their jobs).
