I actually think they may of introduced River Song to eventually replace the Doctor(Or at least have such an option open); being short on lives and all...

What you all seem to forget, is that the Dr. DID have a "child" and it was a girl.
If they do continue with a new Time Lord, I imagine it will be her, the rightful heir to the Time Lord Dynasty.
