Most people do not see hiv/aids as a death sentence. There are many gay men who have been living w/ being poz for 20+ years. To this day, people do not seem to know just how risky hiv is. Why?

Probably because there has been a lot of progress in therapies and therefore the onset of full blown AIDS has been postponed to much later times in life. The risks of dying from something else before probably is greater than before. However, you are right to question the relatively low level of awareness and carelessness of some who think it's no big deal. For one thing, I'm sure it's all very costly to the health services to have to medicate people all their lives who could have done very well without having to take that life-long medication otherwise.

Oddly, people feel quite differently about breathing than they do about the 'wild thing'.
