was intercepted by a Mormon today.
#1
it was kind of a nice experience, actually. i was on the bus today, and there was this girl who came up to me. i knew she was a Mormon the moment she opened her mouth (English speaking friendly stranger outside tourist season = Mormon, lol). i told her right off that i wasn't religious, but she just said she wanted to talk. and i usually don't do this, but i kind of talked to her. it wasn't so bad because she didn't try to talk about religion much, or what's my purpose in life or stuff like that (she did ask what i thought of life and why i was an atheist, and i explained it to her, but that's where that ended too). years back i had an experience with another Mormon in a public library, and that one was really off on getting those points answered, i.e. what do i want to do with my life and what's my higher purpose. i walked off right there.

so this chick was actually of Korean origin. very young, not even 20. her grandparents were Buddhists, she was born in Russia, was adopted and raised in the US, adoptive mom is Japanese. and she's a Mormon. go figure, huh.

i was pretty bored on that bus though, and she was pretty easy to talk to. so it made the time pass. gotta say this was more normal than i expected.

i also ended up telling her i was gay. flat out like that. she didn't even ask anything like it, but i put it in there. (hey, you're a Mormon, and you just picked up a true-blooded atheist who's also gay. lol. well, i saw the irony there). she didn't seem to have a problem, even if she obviously didn't expect it. she told me that she had some relatives of her own who were also gay. asked me if i had a boyfriend, etc.

gotta hand it to her, she was a very nice person.

this was way out of the ordinary day for me, so i just thought i'd tell about it.

I once had two gorgeous Mormons spend an hour in our apartment having lemonade and cookies and discussing the Book of Mormon.

They were sweethearts.

My friend's ex was Mormon and kept a list of ways to distract yourself from masturbating on the refrigerator. I thought it was an attempt to be ironic. I was wrong. Scared

In college I became very good friends with a lesbian and we eventually decided by our senior year to be roommates. We found an apartment in a building owned by a Mormon couple. It was a nice place, but the only drawback was they were in the process of doing some remodeling work at the time we were moving in and had to be in our place a lot. Their daughter was helping out with the work and my roommate had the hots for her. We became friends with her and were hanging out a lot and eventually my lesbian roommate hooked up with her and they started dating. Everything was going good, except at that time the remodeling was at the stage of sanding and refinishing the wood floors in my roommate's bedroom and so there was a couple nights where my roommate had to pull out the futon and sleep in the front room. Unfortunately on one of those nights we had all gone out and gotten drunk and skipped class the next day. We had let the landlord know she could just come in and do the work needed when we were at class and so on that morning she let herself in, expecting us to be gone, and walked in on her daughter and my roommate naked and embraced on the futon. Oh the Mormon horrors could be heard for blocks away.

It took her parents years to get over it, but my old roommate and her Mormon girlfriend are still together more than 28 years later. The dad has since passed, but the Mormon mom is now so close to her daughter and girlfriend that all three do everything together, holidays, celebrations, even vacations and see each other everyday. She spends much more time with them than she does her other two straight married children.

it's kind of weird but interesting at the same time how they put such an effort into going out and talking to complete strangers about whatever it is they talk to them about. i actually think that might be an experience worth having on its own. just going out trying to meet and talk to people just to talk to them. i mean, i'm usually put off if i'm approached like that, but i guess it depends a lot on the person too. if it's a decent person and they're not trying to invade my privacy or preach, then it's not a bad experience. it can actually be kind of refreshing to talk to a complete stranger sometimes. Mormons are unique in that way. i think that could be a spiritual and enlightening experience in itself.

did they just knock on your door, or how did they get to be in your apartment?

I live in Mormon country. About 70% of people I know are Mormon. I am technically baptized Mormon. Mormons vary in being really great to really terrible, lol.

On their mission, the boys are in apartments usually. They are forbidden to be alone while on the mission and are to be in constant sight of their partner, a partner that is randomly changed with little warning at frequent intervals during their two years. That is done to prevent overly close bonds from forming. The one exception to this duality is the bathroom obviously, so they post a rather stern picture of Jesus in there, usually with the inscription like so:

The ones I saw when visiting them were a little more stern, and sometimes were inscribed with "You are never alone."

I the the LDS has a greater challenge in the South because they are not actually unique there. Quite few Southerners will readily speak to strangers, completely aside from any evangelical purpose or zeal.

The thing that is often lost in the ridicule of the uber-religious is that many of them actually DO care a great deal about their fellow men. They DO make personal sacrifices of time, money, safety, for strangers. We are so easily irked by their world view or their positions on various social topics, but it remains very difficult to deny their sincerity and warmth.

I worked over a period of years to become familiar with them, and was rewarded with discovering a whole other people among us here in the States.
