I can relate to that since we are from the same country if not neighborhood...
The thing is it really is about the person, if religion really means something to him or not. And it need not clash with sex! Religion doesnt tell you that sex is impermissible! It really comes to ones perception about faith!

Dogma/Doctrine/Religious practices are all combined with an assortment of different control methods which are used to control the faithful.

Religion is a form of political control system, where a few can keep the many subservient to their will.

Few religious leaders are actually believers in their faith. Most actually demand that their followers do one thing, while they do the opposite.

Delving deeper into religions that have a 'holy book' we find that more often than not that holy book is composed of hand-picked writings by a small group of men who opted for those books that reflected their personal take on 'righteousness' and what that God Person is all about.

Once there is a founded base to 'religion' then those who end up leading down through the generations build surrounding 'doctrine' or 'dogma' that interprets their 'holy book' to reflect their personal beliefs.

Christianity is a good example. In its infancy the idea of hell fire and damnation just did not exist - sure the books used in today's bible existed, but the concept of hell was a very different thing. Once a single authoritative church was establish, the concept of hell being a place of eternal punishment and damnation became 'doctrine' and it was used to scare people into following the church. Part of that was using sex and sexuality as a weapon to focus on the concept of 'sins'.

Control is what religions are about. Few religions actually teach us spirituality.
