The Mask You Wear and the Uighurs
Posted by: InbetweenDreams - 07-27-2020, 08:48 PM - Forum: World-News-Forum - Replies (8)

You might have heard about China having concentration camps that they claim are "re-education camps." The Chinese Communist Party is essentially attempting to erase the Uighurs by either imprisonment or reeducating them. Now that the world is starting to catch on that these re-education camps are concentration camps they have closed some of them and instead of resported to sham trials and putting them into forced labor. Some Uighurs have been transported to textile camps to make masks, such as the ones we're wearing.

Of course when there are profits on the line for large companies, eyes are turned away from the clear and obvious disgusting human rights violation.

Young openly gay mayor running for Congress
Posted by: andy - 07-24-2020, 10:13 AM - Forum: US-News - No Replies

Jamal Bowman on the left and Alex Morse on the right

Alex Morse became his city's first openly gay mayor when he was elected almost a decade ago at the age of 22. Now, he's running for Congress.

Morse was elected mayor of Holyoke, Massachusetts after beating an incumbent who was more than three times his age.

Now 31, Morse is facing off against US representative Richard Neal to represent the 1st Congressional District of Massachusetts in Congress.

The gay candidate advocates for Medicare for All, the legalisation of marijuana and wants to see student debts cancelled.

Crucially, he also wants to see the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency (ICE) defunded.

He said coronavirus has 'illuminated existing disparities and inequalities' in American society.

"The pandemic and how it's manifesting and impacting our communities in many ways just crystallises why I'm running for Congress in the first place and who our federal government should be looking out for and working for," Morse told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency.

"I think it's illuminated already existing disparities and inequalities in our communities that need to be addressed."

Morse has been interested in politics since he served as the student representative on his district's school board.

While still in school in Holyoke, he came out as gay – and went on to found his school's gay-straight alliance, organise a school assembly on LGBT+ issues and worked with politicians on sex education policy.

"I was learning at a young age the power of building coalitions, and of working with other young people to amplify our voice together and the impact it makes to have people working together," he said.

"My coming-out process and finding my voice directly tied to my interest in politics and government and advocacy."

"Without those high school experiences, I wouldn't be as passionate or involved in the work I'm doing today."

Political analysts claim that Morse has an "uphill battle" to beat his Democrat rival in September's primary – but he is prepared for any outcome.

He spends his spare time baking, playing tennis, doing yoga, and watching Schitt's Creek and Queer Eye.

"If this Congress thing doesn't work out, maybe I'll just bake more," he joked.

Boxer James Hawley issues response to homophobic TikTok video
Posted by: andy - 07-24-2020, 10:10 AM - Forum: Gay-News - Replies (2)

Just one day after a TikTok video of James Hawley making homophobic remarks went viral, the British boxer has issued a video apology to the queer community.

Hawley came under immediate fire for his remarks, in which he blasted gay men and transgender people as “dirty c*nts.” The video went viral on social media after former Drag Race UK queen Baga Chipz posted it to Twitter. In less that 24 hours, Hawley was dropped by his management company.

Now Hawley has taken to social media again, this time posting an apology to Instagram. Though his account is set to private, another drag queen, Jolene Dover, posted the video to Twitter.

“Last night I’d hit a brick wall,” Hawley said, “and had enough of all the messages and disgusting, disturbing images that I was being sent by a few members of the gay community and I lashed out and said a few things I didn’t mean. I have friends who are gay and I have a cousin who is gay – I never meant anything by it and I’m sorry to who I offended.”

“At the same time, he added, “how would you like it if members of the gay public on a day-to-day basis sent you inappropriate videos and messages, basically abusing you.” Hawley went on to claim that he was unfairly dismissed by his management company, and begged them to reconsider. He also said he could offer proof that the gay community was harassing him.

Though he claims he acted in anger, nothing in Hawley’s original remarks alludes to any kind of harassment. “Listen, I can understand girls getting with each-other all the time in parties and all things like that,” Hawley ranted in the original video. “I don’t care. I haven’t got a problem. I’d want them to get with each other in front of me. But boys, on the other hand, and transgenders, something seriously wrong with them. What in the earth makes you wanna change your gender and get f*cked in the ass.”

Iconic gay bars and clubs that won’t be reopening after C19
Posted by: andy - 07-23-2020, 12:33 PM - Forum: Gay-News - Replies (2)

Some of your favourite LGBTQ venues will not be back after COVID-19 lockdown measures have been eased.

Gay bars and clubs already faced tough trading conditions before the pandemic. A report in 2017 found that London, UK, lost over 50% of its gay venues in the preceding decade, with more closing since that time. The pattern has been repeated in other hotspots such as New York City and San Francisco.

People increasingly meet at home via apps rather than at bars, while gentrification has led to leases in gayborhoods becoming more expensive.

However, if things were tough before, the pandemic has made things worse. Many hospitality businesses are simply not equipped to stay closed for months at a time or to operate at a reduced capacity.

Here are just some of the venues that are unlikely to reopen once the pandemic eases.

Therapy in New York City announced on Facebook this week it’s unlikely to reopen. The large, Hell’s Kitchen venue, which launched in 2003, is famed for its drag shows, often featuring queens from RuPaul’s Drag Race.

“It’s with tears in our eyes that we have to admit it is highly unlikely that Therapy will ever reopen. Every one of YOU who has ever worked here, performed here, partied here… We love you. And though we cannot be together today, always know you are Therapy’s family.”

Co-owner Tom Johnson told Eater New York there was a “99%” chance of the bar closing. He said much of the bar’s business was tied to visitors to Broadway, but with Broadway basically shut until next year, the bar couldn’t survive serving a limited number of customers.

Also in Hell’s Kitchen is the long-running 9th Avenue Saloon. The fun and unpretentious dive bar had been operating for over 30 years. It has now closed its doors for good according to multiple postings on social media. GayCities has contacted the venue for comment.

Another iconic NYC dive bar set to close this weekend is Rusty Knot in the West Village. Although not a gay bar per se, it was popular with many LGBTQ patrons, particularly on Sundays.

In May, the owners of The Stud – San Francisco’s longest-operating LGBTQ bar – announced the business was vacating its longterm home. The venue has a history dating back to 1966. In 2016, its ownership was taken over by an LGBTQ collective of scene performers and promoters who breathed new life into the business. However, even they couldn’t contend with quarantine, and The Stud is no more at 399 Ninth Street.

At the moment, the team continues to produce online drag shows and a podcast on The Stud’s history, with a fundraising Patreon to help the team find a new home.

Gay sports bar Gym announced earlier this month it was closing its Santa Monica Boulevard location. In a video posted to its Facebook page, co-owner Rick Schmutzler said, “It’s no mystery that this pandemic has been incredibly difficult on small businesses, especially bars and restaurants … There is no path forward for us at this location.”

The business had been operating for 11 years, and was a sister venue to the successful Gym Sportsbar in New York’s Chelsea. The owners are hopeful that they will be able to return to a new WeHo venue at some point in the future.

Launched in 1971, the DC Eagle was the oldest gay bar in Washington DC. Employees were informed of the decision not to reopen in May during an online Zoom meeting. Although it began life as a leather and denim cruise bar, in recent years, DC Eagle had become a more inclusive-space, easing its dress code and hosting regular drag shows and community fundraisers.

The venue had been sold to a new owner, and it was expected to close later in the year to make way for new property developments, but the COVID-19 pandemic brought that closure forward.

Like DC Eagle, the future of Ziegfelds-Secrets – the biggest LGBTQ venue in DC – was already in doubt after it was sold to new owners in 2016, with a view to potential property redevelopment. However, the pandemic was the final nail in the coffin. Management posted a message to social media in May stating, “Ziegfelds/Secrets regrettably has been forced to close our doors. We all have been honored to bring you the best in entertainment for 40 years, regrettably the option to stay and even have a closing event has been taken from us during this crisis.”

BT2, Austin
North Austin gay bar ‘Bout Time 2 closed in March because of the pandemic and announced in May it was shuttering for good. Bout Time II opened in 2012, and was the second incarnation of the bar, with the first ‘Bout Time running from 1984-2012.

This popular LGBTQ venue opened in 2006, proving gay venues could exist outside of Toronto’s gay village. The bar closed in March because of COVID-19. Last week, the team confirmed it would not be returning. What some people love about the place – its cramped intimacy – was now a major setback in a post-COVID, social distancing world.

“The Beaver has always operated on a fine line of keeping the doors open,” the team said on social media. “There were a lot of headwinds that we’ve weathered pretty well … Buildings kept shooting up around us, and somehow we dodged it, time and time again. Our rent kept going up though. The people that come through our doors are all stripes of gay – a demographic that is increasingly being pushed out of a ridiculously priced city, yet the remaining creatures of night kept coming to our little hole in the wall. Then, COVID happened.

“The short-term financial hit of the place being closed is obvious. The future is harder. We are a small, cramped bar. Some hate it, it’s also what some of us like about it. Now it’s a big hurdle. Folks aren’t going to return to the hip to hip, ass to ass days we once knew. At least for not quite some time.”

Owner Lynn Macneill told CBC, “I’m very sure it wouldn’t have closed if the virus hadn’t hit us in the way that it has.”

Another Canadian staple, Boom! had been operating in Fredericton, New Brunswick, for the past 15 years and was the city’s only surviving LGBTQ club. It posted a message to its (now deleted) Facebook page at the end of June, stating: “It has been 105 days since we were forced to close our doors ‪on March 13th‬ due to COVID-19, and during that time we were left not knowing when, or if, we would be permitted to reopen or to what capacity … Unfortunately, with the new limitations, the past and future loss is too great.”

Sadly, as Government-backed business assistance schemes come to an end, this list is likely to grow longer over the coming months.

Caitlyn Jenner wants to be Kanye's VP!
Posted by: andy - 07-22-2020, 01:18 PM - Forum: US-News - Replies (13)

If you thought Kanye West’s quixotic attempt to be elected president couldn’t get any weirder, Caitlyn Jenner is adding herself to the mix!

In a quick conversation with a TMZ reporter, the transgender Olympian and reality TV star said she has texted Kanye to ask if she could be his running mate.

Jenner was supportive of Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign, even going as far as sporting a Trump MAGA hat after he was elected. She has has since soured on Trump – calling him “the worst” for transgender people – but hasn’t stopped being a Republican.

“Are you gonna vote for Kanye now that he’s running,” the reporter asked Jenner as she strolled out of an LA Starbucks.

“Well, I texted him and asked if I could be his VP,” she replied.

“Oh, that’s genius,” the reporter exclaimed.

“Yes, I know,” she replied. “What a combination.”

“Are you gonna do it?” he asked.

“We’ll see,” she said.

In 2017, Jenner said she was considering a run for the U.S. Senate as a Republican. During the 2016 presidential election, she also offered to be Sen. Ted Cruz’s “transgender ambassador” if the far-right Republican won the party’s nomination.

In a now-deleted series of tweets, Kanye said that his wife Kim Kardashian and her mother Kris Kardashian were trying to have him committed for a mental health breakdown.

Kris Kardashian was married to Jenner before her transition.

Former ‘ex-gay’ opposing gay marriage is to marry a man!
Posted by: andy - 07-21-2020, 06:05 PM - Forum: Gay-News - No Replies

A former, leading figure of a prominent ‘ex-gay’ organisation has announced he is marrying his male partner next year. He’s also apologised for the work he did in trying to persuade others they could change their sexuality.

Randy Thomas was formerly the Vice President and spokesperson for the now-defunct Exodus International. The organisation, which ran from 1976 until 2013, advocated for conversion therapy, encouraged gay people to deny their true selves and lobbied politicians to vote against gay rights.

As a lobbyist for the group, Thomas worked with major right-wing figures and conservative organisations, including the Arlington Group and DC Group. He advocated against same-sex marriage and hate-crime legislation. He says his work brought him into contact with the likes of Mike Pence, Karl Rove and Kellyanne Conway.

After Exodus International closed down – primarily because it failed to turn any gay people straight – Thomas revealed in 2015 his attraction to men had never really gone away, despite years of celibacy, praying and 23 years of involvement with Exodus.

Thomas has given a video interview to Truth Wins Out, in which he looks back upon his life, his reasons for working with Exodus International, and his regret about some of his past actions.

Joining him in the video is his partner, Dan Scobey. The two men live in Florida, where they founded a non-profit organisation, Thrive LGBTQ+, to foster acceptance and counter the “ex-gay” industry.

In the video, Thomas talks about why he “betrayed” the gay community through his former work.

“It’s a hard thing to think about, but I’m glad that the blinders have now been ripped off, and I now of course support full marriage equality, and I’m going to marry a dude next year!”

Thomas grew up in Nashville, Tennessee. His family threw him out of his home for being gay. Being thrown out was an experience he describes as, “one of the most traumatic experiences I’ve ever had in my life.”

Thomas’ mom told him would burn in hell and had to leave home immediately. He ended up living in his car and contemplating suicide, but was later taken in by a local drag queen (“God used a drag queen to save my life”) and threw himself on to the gay party scene and drug-taking.

Thomas then suffered a hate crime attack, when he was beaten by two men at a party.

The incident impacted his mental health. He moved in with an aunt in Texas and, in an effort to address his drug use, became involved with an evangelical church. This is when he became interested in the “ex-gay” movement. This led to him joining Exodus International meetings, which at first appeared to offer him emotional support. It was support Thomas needed and craved. However, it came with a catch. He was expected to work to change his sexuality.

“The false sense of community and acceptance that I experienced there was the first time I’d ever really felt accepted. It did not take long after I joined … to kind of put on the identity of being a former homosexual. And I found my voice, and I shared my story, and people were crying and sharing how impactful it was.”

He went on to rise within the organisation's ranks.

“Being a national spokesperson, looking back on it was traumatic. At first, I thought it was fun. I thought it was exciting… [but] I knew in my heart of hearts that what I was saying wasn’t true.”

Thomas talks about his work with politicians.

“It was just a rush to have these high profile people wanting us to join them in their public policy pushes. I went and met with Rick Santorum in his office and I gave this big emotional testimony, and thanked him for his righteous stand… and for a senator to walk over, put his hand on my shoulder, and say, ‘I’m so glad you’re here’, was powerful.”

Now, reflecting on the things he was campaigning for, Thomas says, “I don’t know how I was ever that person. It was horrible.”

He now says the things he campaigned for, and the situations he got himself into via Exodus, were “dysfunctional” and “awful”. He gets tearful at how he “betrayed” his community.

Thomas also talks about how proponents of religious-fuelled conversion therapy get their hooks into people who are seeking to change themselves.

“In the ex-gay world, cognitive dissonance is an everyday way of life, and you’re taught how to respond to the dissonance with words of faith, like ‘I struggle but this is my cross to bear, this is the thorn in my side, this is what all honest Christians have to put up with’. So even though you know in your heart that it’s not working, you’re not changing, there’s an excuse for it.”

He goes on to apologise to those harmed by the “toxic theology” of groups such as Exodus, theology he once promoted.

“I’m very sorry. And if you’re angry and can’t forgive me, I get it. I’m angry and can’t forgive myself for some things. I’m not trying to convince you to like me, but I hope you accept my sincere apology. And now that I know better, I’m going to do better.”

To those who may think they can change their sexuality, Thomas now says: “It is a lie to say you cannot be a happy, healthy, whole and faithful gay person … In your heart of hearts, embrace who you are, and that’s where your freedom is.”

Trump Admin Memo explains how to spot a trans woman
Posted by: InbetweenDreams - 07-21-2020, 02:41 PM - Forum: Gay-News - Replies (7)

So this is HUD, Housing and Urban Development, which is to help people find shelter. I knew people who were on HUD and how vulnerable people who need housing assistance are and this is just absolute cruelty. First, how can you call yourself a Christian or anything for that matter and claim to help the poor and needy and refuse someone who needs help because they're different than you. How twisted do you have to be not to see what it is? Why are we going backwards?
