Internet Explorer Refresh Rage

I'm using IE7 with Win XP. Has anyone ever found a way of stopping irritating page refreshes? For example I am a "visual" rather than a "touch" typist. I need to look at the keyboard. Often, when typing a forum or webmail message, a window below the one I'm working in will refresh on to the top layer and I'll find that I've been typing for several seconds to no avail and have to do it again after retrieving the window I'm trying to work in.

I have not found anything that looks obvious among the settings in IE and a quick search of the web suggests I may need to buy additional software, which may not even then prevent page refreshes if they are coded in Java.

Any ideas, anyone?
