Sorry for your loss and congrats on starting the coming out process. No, not everyone needs to know. Judge the character of those who you think might be ok and those who would not.
I can't be of any further help in that department, though, being a closet case so far.
About self discovery, it was pretty simple. I started liking other guys around 11-12 (right around when my male classmates started liking girls) and it was clear from that point on and until now how attracted I am to guys. I shut my mouth and never told anyone.
