@Doc, if you do a search on t-rex mini trap, you will find a lot of places that sell them. Pest control is a year-round job on a farm.

Here in the Southwest the mice are very dangerous because they carry Hanta virus that can kill even healthy adults. University researchers studied the mice in the next village over from mine and found that 60% of the field mice had the virus. I know one person who died and another who had to be in an induced coma for two weeks in intensive care at the hospital but she made a full recovery.

Sealing up every tiny entrance to your home is the best bet. Mice can get through a hole the size of a dime. They can jump out of a five gallon bucket and can climb walls to access attics.

On the farm we use barn cats, live traps, snap traps, and bait stations (with vitamin D bait so there's no secondary poisoning risk for other wildlife.) Live traps are for the food handling areas but then we still kill 'em. We keep habitat for snakes and raptors.

We have a mating pair of ravens living in the forest nearby that we have trained to come feed on this one rock. So when we empty the traps the ravens enjoy an easy meal. Biggest raven's I've ever seen they are so well fed!

Rural living has its pluses and minuses. Being rural and gay and new to the area is not the easiest combination. People are generally suspicious of outsiders and practically no one is out of the closet. The beauty and peace and quiet is unmatched. So lots of trade offs to consider.

@Camfer you're in Arizona right? Are you a local or did you come from someplace else? I just want some land, so I can build an small adobe house and maybe a 400 or 500 meter range and a much shorter pistol range I dont want much out of life. Which ever part of Arizona is the most arid is where I want to go. Ive been to three different deserts and I really like them.

@Doc I've spent most of my life in New Mexico, but according to the locals I'm not "from here." That's because my family wasn't living here in the early 1800s when this was part of Mexico. Or from the Native American perspective, I'm not from here because my family wasn't here 1000 years ago. So when people ask if I am from here, I say, "No, but I have been here most of my life."

There is so much public land in the west where you can go shooting, no real need to be able to shoot on your own property. But yeah, bigger parcels of land are easy to come by. I prefer high desert to low desert. It's often 20 degrees cooler in the high desert, but still plenty warm. If you want hottest, there's anywhere in and around Tucson, Phoenix, Yuma, Lake Havasu.

Adobe is good if you build it twice as thick. Straw bale construction is another good option for thick walls and decent natural insulation. Either one is easy to build yourself if you want to go that route. Both are a lot of maintenance with a natural mud plaster. Straw bale, metal roof for water catchment with long eaves to protect the plaster and you can get something together very quickly.

Have come made it out to Arizona to do a exploratory road trip? What kind of work will you do? You can live remotely but then finding work is hard.

Sorry for really slow reply... went home on vacation, came back to work, and really haven't been on here much.

Here's a little bit about my being outed experience:
https://gayspeak.com/showpost.php?p=654909&postcount=12

Basically was dating a guy in church who felt guilty and told everyone.

Going back to Viagra - holy crap - that stuff works. Picked up a couple boxes while passing through Dubai last week - bada boom bada bing = schwing!

Depends where you are planning on living Doc really and how you want to live? If you keep everything tidy and clean you shouldn't have an issue.

I hate rats they are destructive, miserable, little cocksuckers and I dont feel bad killing them at all. I felt so terrible killing these mice, they are so very cute. It sucks but it was me or the mice and they had to go. Do any of you guys hate killing mice?
Mice are just as destructive as rats, man. They're just WAY cuter.

Im not so sure @TwisttheLeaf I've never seen mice mice gnaw through cinderblock. Anyway they are all dead now, and they wont be destroying anything.

On to more cheerful topics. I just got accepted to a new school school, so I'll have to postpone my westward move for another 18 or so months until I graduate.

No, but they'll shit in your rice and cereal, and they'll tear up your furniture to make themselves a smelly piss and feces filled nest inside your favorite chair or couch cushion, or the corner of your closet.

Yeah. I lived in some really crap-ass places in my teens. I have a good hate on for mice, rats, silverfish, and spiders (the last being not so much a hate as a phobia).

I used to deliver both mice and rats caught in Have a Heart traps to be released on the beach. It was only a few times when I noticed that a beach cat, an owl, and other critters were getting close (but not too close) as I did so. I was going to free the trapped, but they were thinking "free dinner."

It wasn't my idea, though, I was just the one tasked with taking them to the beach, so I didn't mind being the "the restaurant that delivers."

They come out in the dark, mostly in bathrooms and kitchens. And they eat book pages.
