Homosexuality
#21
Well based from what ao know of genetics and evolution it may be as simple as population control which is totally natural. Basically it could be considered as a prezygotic mating barrier (an evolutionary barrier which prevents the creation of a zygote) so the act of sexual reproduction does not go ahead. Other examples of this are birds which produce different songs to avoid mating. If you think about it if you are attracted to the same gender you will avoid the opposite sex therefore there is a decreased possibility of a zygote being made from sperm and egg. In nature there are also things called post zygotic barriers which mean after the zygote has been formed there is some sort of issue which occurs which may prevent the birth or after the birth the offspring has a decreased chance of survival so as not to overproduce. I do agree that homosexuality is natural and to an extent I agree with it being one of the prezygotic mating barriers.

Since when did species need to control their own population? Food supply, predators and disease seem to do that well enough (with the exception of Homo sapiens in the last thousand years or so).

I've never heard of this, please tell me more.

Well Fred, in the animal kingdom its a whole different kettle of fish. As humans we have combatted many issues such as food supply, predators and diseases with technology therefore the population is on the rise dramaticcaly. As for species controlling their own population its not something that is controlled it is totally innate kind of like natural selection. When you apply what we know about animal behaviour, all animals exhibit some form of homosexuality therefore if you think of it rationally same sex attraction acts as a prezygotic mating barrier hindering reproduction. As for the birds, the willow warbler and the chiff chaff are essentially the same bird but over time have developed different mating calls. They can mate and breed sucessfully in the event they do meet up but usually don't because of their different mating calls which act as a prezygotic mating barrier. Basically I'd say homosexuality is perfectly natural, there must be some natural use for it in nature so it's all good. I could delve further into population genetics etc, but its a weekend and I can't be bothered. haha

I am afraid that is not an answer to my question.

Are willow warbler-chiff chaff cross adult birds as reproductively successful as pure willow warblers and chiff-chaffs? Do female willow warblers or chiff fail to find mates?

From a strictly biological viewpoint being gay doesn't make sense as gay people are missing one of the "Characteristics of life", to be able to procreate, the only such characteristic that you don't need to survive and is only for the survival of the species. Perhaps it came about through evolution because we are currently overpopulated, but that doesn't explain homosexuality in animals which is more common than one would think. These things are governed by chromosomes which are prone to mutation and change, that's how you get cancer not that being gay is a cancer Attraction.to men has been a positive thing in my life, it brought me my boyfriend, believe me that's a very good thing.
Besides everyone else's answers (like Bowyn's) are much better and less mired in science. You have to understand that I went to a strictly scientific High School, and am currently studying medicine which has a lot of science in it. Listen to the posts above. Just my 2 cents.

And, I thought it was one of the perks of being gay, no rug rats! In my opinion homosexuality is nature's way of saying "too many people on the planet." Next time you go to the grocery store sit in your car and watch those women come out with groceries to fill an SUV while a child is screaming. Then look at the mom's face. She has been screwed by the social hetero reproduction scam and knows it. Most will tell you they wish they had finished school, and built a career. 4AM feedings, you must be kidding!

If the subordinate males in a tribe did sexual favours for their superordinates then they would be more liklely to survive to become superodinate and have their pick of the male and females in the tribe.
