What's the purpose of homosexuality in humans?

Are there strictly homosexual Bonobos? I don't know but I'd be very surprised if there are (the three word search string in quotes certainly gathered no results).

Bonobos utilize sex to keep clan unity, maintain friendships and alliances, settle disputes, celebrate, and affection. Unlike other common chimpanzees, they don't practice aggressive sex acts or seem impressed with males who make aggressive territorial displays.

Seeing this, it's pretty well impossible to put the heterosexual/ homosexual labels on the sex lives of bonobos who use it for greater purposes than any heterocentric is willing to admit humans might as well. Humans just fuck to make kids and a bit of pleasure, right? If so Bonobos have evolved higher than we have in terms of sex.

I'll share something here that is somewhat relevant to that point...

Have a few straight nudist married buddies who will jo together every now and then as part of their "guy time". I've been part of these sessions before. Tried explaining this to another straight dude on another forum who asked about it. He insisted that no straight guy would ever be naked in front of another guy and certainly wouldn't jo in front of another guy. Basically insinuating that we're all gay...Also pointed out that interestingly, it has served to strengthen the bonds of brotherhood between us. He really freaked out after that. Guy claimed to be a nude male model yet also claimed to never see anyone naked before, except the few women he was with....

very telling about his fears of seeing of naked men...

That's heterocentric thinking at its best. Define reality as it best fits your narrow perception of it and to fit your own self image as a heterosexual.

In ravens, there is a single breeding pair and dozens of "juvenile" ravens who do not breed. They are kept in a non-breeding state through social dominance.

I forgot about ravens. I've been told about them and need to read about them.

It's important to point out that the stress from domination by breeding adult raven does not directly cause juveniles not to reach maturity. The stresses from domination certainly cause hormonal changes in the juveniles as in so many other species.

ETOTE Wrote:so basically you're saying gays had their place in the cave man days to serve as extra hands to baby sit, fight and gather food without risking creating more mouths to feed?

That is the simplest description. Undoubtedly it wasn't wholly black and white. The culture/society was most likely highly sophisticated, and no one saw the non-procreating members as a 'bad' thing or 'odd' or 'usual' or for that matter as just another pair of adult hands.

No doubt there was strong familial ties between everyone in a tribe - blood and otherwise. So this is no different than if your aunt or uncle lived in your house staying at home to babysit the kids when mom and dad went out for a night on the town, or paying a little rent to make ends meet...

ETOTE Wrote:while it would make sense when societies first started organizing, in today's world, specifically regarding children, with all the bs religious dogma still lumping anyone who isn't a straight female into the category of a pedophile, most people don't trust their children around single straight men, let alone gay people for fear they will molest them....

So, that stigma really doesn't help matters, but it is still largely a reality.

This is a relatively new trend. Prior to WWII no one thought pedophile when thinking of gays. I seriously doubt people thought pedophilia was a real thing. even back when I was a kid no one talked about it, definately wasn't one of the questions a teacher would ask if you came to school all messed up.

Cinema films are pretty revealing about the roles of gays in society. There was a sudden 'villian-ization' of homosexuals During the Great Depression, prior to that it was pretty even on which side of 'good Vs Evil' the homosexual fell on. Granted, open homosexuality was forbidden in movies, but there is a lot of coded clues to characters and their slant .

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_...rican_film Makes for a quick interesting read, which not only shows the film industries take, but public opion take on the matter.

Gee Bowyn. Thanks for saying it as good as I would have!

It might have something to do with male bonding, and the scientific reality that men have a stronger sex drive and need sexual relief more than women.

In the Roman Empire, soldiers were not allowed to have sex with women when they were in a foreign expedition, but they were allowed to have sex with each other.

You're not completely right about that. Army life for Romans didn't come close to resembling modern armies. Virtually everywhere they travelled they were followed by cooks, slave traders, skilled artisans, musicians........ and lots and lots of prostitutes (male and female) and even wives and children. Where they lacked prostitutes they always found companionship with the women of the armies they conquered in foreign lands.
