Lose Weight/Excercise
just out of curiosity does anyone else take cold showers after a work out? a friend of mine told me about it and it works wonders with muscle soreness. I do half the shower with warm water and the other as cold as I can take it.

Well never done kick turns...the guy who was supposed to do the triathlon with me quit coming back in February, so all the swimming help pretty much stopped then. I have been going to these swimming classes but they're really more about doing drills and not so much technique. The race will be on the lake which made me think that swimming in the lake would be helpful but should only be doing it when other people are going. Last time the folks who invited me down were swimming over 3 miles and when I got there they had already started and were out of sight, wasn't going to wait around all evening.

It takes me about a minute to do 50 yards....No not fast. The trouble I am seeing out on the lake is finding a sustainable pace...the last lake swim I did I seemed to do a lot better about that but this late in the game I don't know that there's much I am going to be able to do that will really help...Unless I just risk it and go swimming in the lake...I don't even have a swim cap for that matter.

So your time is fine for this swim. Really you just need to build endurance and efficiency. I think you should do the triathalon and I think you will finish all events.

You didn't answer the question about alternate side breathing. That will help if you can do it.

Don't work on kick turns now. That is for after the event. Just swim 600 yards every day, or at least 5 days a week. Focus on finding a consistent pace you can hold without stopping. Time yourself and track your times in a log. Focus on really reaching far for the longest stroke you can make. Focus on gliding through the water.

Doing those swim drills with others would be a help. You can't train with people doing 3-mile lake swims. It's good that didn't happen.

Get yourself a tight little speedo, a swim cap, and goggles that don't leak. Consider shaving your entire body. All that reduces drag and will make your swim easier. Shaving your legs is good for biking too. It will itch like crazy when it grows back in.

You've come so far, no reason to avoid this event. Time to sign up!

[MENTION=20941]Camfer[/MENTION] I can breathe on either side. I am known to pull my head up too high though, or least the old guy that does the swim class... I can easily do 600 yards in the pool, been able to go over a mile but there's breaks here and there....

When I would swim in the lake with folks doing the 3 miles I would join them for about 400 yards and then head back but I think it kind of defeats the purpose of swimming with other people.

I do have speedos, not the brief style...not THAT confident lol... I do have a pair of goggles.

I may just shave for the event. I know one thing you don't know how much small things make a difference...

Been swimming for about 6 months with some direction, kind of wished I had a little more time and "mastered" a couple different strokes...but I guess I'll just deal with what I got to work with. Hopefully I don't suck as bad as I think I might.

Okay, by alternate side breathing I mean instead of breathing say only on your right side, where you are breathing on every other stroke, you alternate sides and breathe on every 3rd stroke. It is way more efficient and you still get plenty of air. So you breathe on your right, stroke stroke stroke, breathe on your left, stroke stroke stroke, breathe on your right, etc.

Good point you make about not pulling your head out of the water to breathe. You will find that with your mouth at water level, your action through the water creates a trough at your mouth and you can breathe without lifting your head.

If you're going to shave, start now and shave again weekly or whenever it starts to itch or get too prominent. The first time is irritating and you end up with cuts and bumps. Use a brand new good blade. If you shave for the first time the day before the race, you'll look like that guy who shaved for the first time the day before the race. Better to get in the habit now.

Get yourself to 600 yards in the pool with no rest at all. That should be your goal. To start, any pace is fine as long as you don't stop.

I've shaved once ways back....didn't have too much trouble, everything just feels weird.

But yeah I usually breathe on each side just turn my head a little too far...but when I try not to I inhale water...the swim instructor said I'm straining my neck.

Going to try getting to the pool early in the AM tomorrow and try to beat the crowd so I can claim the lane.

I did 600 yards at the pool in about 15:30... I figure in the lake I'll probably do a bit worse as I'm sure I'll swim anything but straight... But today felt harder than normal, probably a fuel thing... Food...when you eat, what you eat....hydration is a big one all make a big difference on how well you do...

Well I guess it is official, I went ahead and registered for the triathlon...damn expensive but I guess I have no choice now since I'm ever more financially committed lol

Awesome! Your swim time on the 600 means you will surely complete all three events. Glad you registered!
