Age Appropriate Content
It's going to be different for each parent, no matter how open-minded they may be. My stepdaughter is 14 and me and we've discussed anything she wants to discuss regarding sexual identity. It seems to have helped her try to identify part of herself is but she obviously is going to go through many changes at this age. I have a toddler and I assume I will do the same for him when he reaches that age.

On the subject of cartoons, I personally feel that if they simply show non-conforming gender roles or same-sex couples/romantic interests, it goes a long way in cementing ideals in a fresh, young mind. I don't believe you should worry about having to set aside an episode of an early childhood show to highlight sexual identity.
