On the other hand it just might wake Canberrra up to the stupidity of allowing strategically important manufacturing industry to move offshore.

Ditto. The US is finally realizing that Tiwian being one of a couple countries that can make microchips isn't a good thing long term. I think there's only 3 companies in the world that actually make the microchips, companies like Intel, AMD, Apple design the chips they want and a company like TSMC makes it for them... Intel does make their own but it is not on US shores... Considering China and their "affection" for Taiwan and other political problems can become a huge issue.

Strangely we can blame western capitalism for the rise of Chinese State capitalism ( let’s not delude ourselves its anything like a socialist system). Businesses in the West had the stupid idea of moving manufacturing offshore to reduce production costs in the interests of ‘shareholder benefit’. The fact they have been willing to deal with a system of government they pretend to oppose for short term profit is now about to strangle them.

Well, perhaps. China is in no position to do anything bold yet. They do want to fabricate microchips but haven't been successful yet. At the same time the US is putting icing on the cake for (i forget specifically which companies) to build plants in the US. Apparently, it is very difficult to make microchips if you don't know how to make them...
