gay characters in non-LGBT films
#21
Beaux Wrote:I remember, when I was 11, seeing the movie adaptation of "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof". By the end of it, I was absolutely AMAZED. I had sat through the entire movie with my parents and I kept looking over at them throught the film wondering how they couldn't SEE what I was seeing!
It lead me to obsessively read through all of Tennessee Williams' plays, and later (when I was 17) to a huge argument with my parents. I still remember my mother telling me "Paul Newman would never have taken the role if it was about a gay man!"! LOL
What is really funny, I think, is that if you go to IMDB and look up the film, there is a comments section where people are STILL arguing that Brick wasn't gay! Please, I knew he was gay when I was 11!

Haha, how clever of you... Ah, but then, your parents didn't have your special skills.... that's the rub.

Judy Garland's father made TEA and SYMPATHY, a great film about being more sensitive, and possibly gay, although the film never mentions the word or dares to hint at more than that. Lovely, very discreet film with splendid roles for Deborah Kerr and the young man.

In the gay in rough films section there's also the great performance of Jaye Davidson in The Crying Game. (minute 3:39 in the next post's video inclusion)

OK so here's a test, how many films can you name from this compilation?
There's a lot!!!

For one thing, I know I've not seen that first film, the excerpt of which features Shirley McLaine and Meryl Streep. What film is that?

The very first film, with Meryl and Shirley, is "Postcards form the Edge" (got great reviews, but honestly not my fav McLaine film, but pretty funny)

The one with the actress who plays in "Weeds" is "Fried Green Tomatos" (FANTASTIC FILM!)

@ 1:43 is "Torch Song Trilogy" (I would say one of the MOST iconic gay movies ever!)
@ 1:49 is "The Living End" (considered by some to be THE seminal gay movie of the AIDS era; very radical-farie)

@Beaux and @trekkiejim, thank you both... except trekkiejim I'm not sure which films you're pointing at, do you have the timing?
Beaux, of course Torch Song Trilogy, the snippet was dark and not long enough, I might otherwise have recognised it.
Not sufficiently familiar with The Living End yet... got it, not really watched yet. And oh, yes, Fried Green Tomatoes At The Whistle Stop Café, very nice film but I saw it such a long time ago, I'd forgotten about it.
The rest still needs to be found, and I'll edit a list for the second part. Thanks for your help, all.

Postcards From The Edge (Thanks, Beaux)

that film is Far from Heaven. Quaid plays a gay man in a traditional marriage and family setting of the 1950s Connecticut. i've mentioned this film before, it's one of my favorite gay movies (although it's not entirely on a gay theme). Quaid's performance is beautiful, and i highly recommend seeing it. very healthy film, with high quality acting and plot.

and, Dennis Quaid is damn hot. i believe i've mentioned that before too. Smile
