That's perhaps a bit excessive. If the parachute doesn't open, you die. If my material bombs, I walk off stage to scattered polite applause from about fifty people I probably won't ever see again. Yeah, it was uncomfortable, and nowhere near the reaction I wanted, but it's survivable.

I got a long encouraging message from a (full-time) stand-up comic this morning, as well as an offer to perform (something non-comedic) later this month, so I'm feeling even more positive about the whole thing.
