Elevated temperature kills off viruses and other parasites in the body as well as all kinds of remnant leftover crap (bacteria, etc) from previous illnesses or elsewhere. This is also why the influenza spreads during the colder seasons and not summertime. The summertime temperatures are too high for certain viruses to survive.
Higher temperature improves body's natural immune function. For example, it increases T cell proliferation, mobility of white blood cells, and secretion of antibacterial agents.
It is your body fighting the illness. And it does it better than most drugs.
