[FONT="Comic Sans MS"]What is striking is the uniforms the soldiers were expected to wear in the 18th and 19th centuries (1709 and 1815) that to my mind would have made them sitting targets.

As an infantryman pre-rifled barrel you wouldn't aim at an individual soldier you'd just fire into a rank of soldiers.

Weaponry of the time used crude black powder so battle fields would quickly fill with smoke. The bright uniforms were your best protection against being shot in the back by your own side.

Riflemen who were not expected to fight in rank and file wore darker uniforms. Ala Sharpe
