As you may know, Brindisi is actually a seaside port of Southern Italy in the region called Puglia (if I'm not mistaken) They have boats there leaving for Corfu and Greece. Took one once.
But in Italian "un brindisi" is actually a toast to something or someone... The most famous Brindisi of all probably being the one toasting Violetta in Verdi's La Traviata. Everybody has heard that toasting song... Libiam... I know I've sung it when performing in La Traviata... I'll see if I can find you a YouTube of it. I learnt last year that the Spaniards use a similar term: Brindis (I believe) for a toast (of champagne or wine or whatever)...
