Schools work very hard to make history bland & boring. I think it's very interesting when it's uncensored and given with full context (and context makes it easier to remember), but most schools won't do that out of fear of political & parental groups...and I suspect that it's not just ruined to prevent controversy but to discourage kids from learning more themselves.
But true story, I caught a date being wrong in a history class because of an Iron Maiden song on Alexander the Great. The "teacher" (actually a coach given a teaching position to comply with Texas law) mocked me for it but I then found 3 library books (one from the school) that backed me on that which got me sent to the office (and I had to surrender the school library book which never found its way back to the shelf). When given a multiple choice test on it later one was on that date which included the date given in the incorrect answer book and the correct date. I chose the correct date and it was the only test question marked wrong for me.
