Ahh yes...the 'terminal' or 'command' screen, what you are seeing there on his computer is the underlying operating system. The graphical interface is just that an: interface.
I had to do a fair bit in there when getting my Ubuntu setup, because the settings I needed to change simply were not there in the graphical interface.
True Unix is its own operating system, but mainly used on business servers. In his case it would still be Ubuntu (or by the more general term: Linux).
When I was young there was no graphic interfaces - PC's had DOS (as did Apple, though the 2 had differences), and Businesses/Colleges/Government had Unix or Vax .. they were all 'text only' as far as the basic operating system. .. Oh and stuff like a mouse didn't exist(for general use)..same for the internet!

I prefer a good old incandescent lightbulb over one of those spiral CFL's!
But I do also like the older fluorescent's that are 4-foot long strip. (maybe I'm just old-fashioned when it comes to lighting )
