The beginning is stronger than the end though, it gets a little too preachy and dissolves any semblance of being a novel and becomes a straightforward political tract. And I'm entirely sympathetic to Sinclair's politics, but it does weaken the novel overall.

Some of the stories are fun, but I think the major appeal of Holmes is the campy ridiculousness of the stories. Many of the stories in that collection are rather weak though, you should try out the book length Sign of Four, it's not bad.
