To show their discontent with the commercialization of their hippie way of life, local residents of the Haight-Ashbury District rallied together in a protest. This march known as âThe Death of Hippieâ took place on October 6, 1967 on the streets of Haight-Asbury. They carried a cardboard coffin with a âdead hippieâ on top of it with flowers in hand down the street. Participants carried candles during the march and hippie artifacts were burned in the streets and Taps were played. The march brought the hippie era to an end.
