I don't think it is weird or cheesy at all, it's a really nice gesture. And as you say he is a romantic, I am sure he will love it 
. I think romantic gestures like this don't need to wait until a special occasion, spontaneity makes it all the more romantic IMO. I say do it, it's a really nice thought
