If you're still not 'out', but you want to be 'out' to find a partner, you should first admit to yourself what you really are. You can figure out how to admit to others, if you ever want, later but the first step in building confidence is admitting to yourself who you are and what you want. And you have to nail it to your head, until it's nailed down to your self, because if you don't admit it to yourself, your confidence won't build up.
For me, those 'no thanks, i'm straight' scenario can be terrifying at first. But it's more like trial and error and working from your mistakes. And the more you experience how to approach someone you like, you'll get smarter and you'll figure how to do it properly.
Just make your expectations right.
