I once tried doing a marine tank with that 10 gallon and boy was that a bad idea. Not only did I have no idea about the nitrogen cycle I had people at the pet store give me horrible advice, it's a wonder the fish lived as long as they did. That was about 10-12 years ago, I honestly am not sure how far back it was that I tried all that.
Sometimes it is really hard to diagnose. I think you have done the right thing seperating it just in case.
I've never been daring enough for marine! I think I was put off as I did work experience in a fish store as a teen and I accidentally killed a Lionfish by miscalculating the salt levels during the daily checks. I think I'll stick to tropical! Haha.
The advice you can get from some fish stores is awful. I have found one that has people working there that seem to care for the welfare of the fish and know their stuff, so I only go there for fish and supplies. Places like that are all too rare sadly. As for the stores that give bad advice, I think it is either staff not really having enough knowledge or only being interested in the sale and not caring whether the fish live or die afterwards.

I'm kind of jealous of you guys. I'd love an aquarium. Maybe when I get my new dream house, and de-clutter my life...
Thanks Steve . Do it! Honestly, it is so rewarding. I find myself watching the fish sometimes for long periods of time. It's very soothing .
