I can think of a great reason...the worst homophobia in all of music. Openly advocating killing gay people...violence against gay people...kinda ruins the entire genre of reggae for me. As they have been banned in many places from performing because of this...recently in Sweden...they have done some damage control recently with a few of them promising not to write lyrics telling people to murder gay people. A little too late for me and I don't like their energy at all.
I can understand that, and I've heard some of what you're talking about, growing up around it. I've even myself been called a Batty Boy[Patwa Derogatory word for gays, equavilant to Faggot- [Bah - Te - Boy].
But what music is really sacred? Not even so called Christian music is sacred anymore.
It's what you choose to listen to and how you take it.
I don't like it either, but i'm not going to go marching for gay rights because some guy or a girl talks about murdering gays.
That's his/her opinion, they're entitled to it and ultimately it's up to you on what way you take it and react to it.
For me personally, It's a part of my heritage. It's like White people raving about Metallica or Punk Rock and some people consider that devil's music. and Black people love Rap music, which is hated on by most White people.
I generally don't listen to songs that defames gays, and not all of Reggae is that way. Even Bob Marley wasn't that way and he was practically the father of Reggae.
Most reggae that is sung with hatred towards gays, are usually sung by those who believe in the Lion of Judah, otherwise known as Rastafarians. But not even all Rasta's hate gays.
I think it's bad to just generalize a whole genre as being anti-gay.
We're trying to get gay Reggae artists published now, and they need support if they're ever going to succeed. Same with Rap.
The only gay Rapper I know of is; DeadLee.
Ultimately, it's your opinion, but I just think it's bad to generalize like that, based on one or two experiences. If that were the case, I probably wouldn't like anything outside my own culture.
Not trying to argue, just to hopefully enlighten mile: .
