Drop a cube of raw steak on a cup of coke, come back to class - the steak has mysteriously vanish. Did Mr Barnes (our Science Teacher) fish it out, or did the acids in the soda eat it up?
In truth it took more than a day for the piece of meat to 'dissolve', however the acids in sodas (most sodas have acids) are enough to degrade meat and other materials - over time.
http://www.snopes.com/cokelore/tooth.asp Snopes does a bang up job of addressing the 'myth' of soda acids and does point out that orange juice does have more acidic abilities than the phosphorus in soda.
I can see a whole mouse being reduced to a gelatinous mass in a bottle/can of soda over a 15 month period. I can also see it happening in a jug of orange juice and various other natural acids.
