I don't think RE is really meant to scare in the same way anymore. In the first games, it was the tension of the quietness, but knowing there could be something terrifying around the corner. In the new RE games its about panic, the number of monsters coming at you and the unpredictability of their movements - though its just not as scary since games have taught us to react to that behaviour.
For me, I just enjoy the story, that's why I can't wait for RE6. I want to find out what is Ada's motive in all this and who is she really working for. Other than the mention of an Alex Wesker in RE5, Ada is the last loose end in the RE story to me.
