I just got back from the store and one of the things I got was Jif peanut butter, presumably because it was on sale. But for about a minute I was trying to choose between that or an even bigger jar that was only slightly more expensive, and I THINK I chose the Jif because I never tried the other one (so had no idea of its taste or texture) and I didn't like that the other one was in a glass jar while Jif was in plastic. And as I thought about it I heard singing in my head out of nowhere going, "Moms like you choose Jif. Choose Jif." And as I wondered where the hell that came from I heard a woman's voice in my head going, "Choosy moms choose Jif." I figured it must've been an ad I heard somewhere before, but as I couldn't remember I just grabbed the Jif and kept going.
Then on the way home I remembered that it was a commercial back in the 90s (these days it's more "moms & dads" rather than just moms) and I saw it at least a couple of times. I didn't watch much TV at all back then so I couldn't have seen it a lot. I suppose it says something about the power of advertising when over a decade later it stuck with me. For those curious (and perhaps very brave):
But surely that was a coincidence and my choice of Jif was rational of my own free will...at least that's what I keep telling myself.
