i wonders how has salt become completely economically worthless after being considered so much valuable back in Roman times, d/h?

Increased offer and decreased demand. Obviously. For instance we have refrigeration now, preservants, etc, so people don't need to salt their foods to preserve them. Couple that with increased and more efficient production due to industrialization and there you have your answer.
