What book are you reading now?
Enjoy. Dryden maay be as foreign to modern ears as Virgil but well worth it.

We read large chunks in high school Latin, a brave undertaking. I still have my textbook and every once in a while pick it up to reminisce.

LJay, I don't find Dryden foreign at all. The text is beautiful, although not too smooth at all times. And I love poetry that rhymes. In fact, I think poetry should rhyme.

How can you not love this:

Virgil - The Aeneid Wrote:I hear thee, Fate; and I obey thy call!
Not unreveng'd the foe shall see my fall.
Restore me to the yet unfinish'd fight:
My death is wanting to conclude the night.

Or this:

''And thrice about his neck my arms I flung,
And, thrice deceiv'd, on vain embraces hung.
Light as an empty dream at break of day,
Or as a blast of wind, he rush'd away''.

I only find that Dryden can be a bit unpolished/uncouth sometimes, but it's a passable fault.
''Do I look civilized to you?''

He has an uncanny knack of creating characters with the most unpronounceable names sometimes! Still, love his sci-fi!

Yay I'm not the only Banks fan on GS
I wish I lived in the Culture. I've actually had dreams I did, I hate waking up :-(

Me too. I've read most of his Culture series, just got the Hydrogen Sonata to read to complete the set. I've been putting it off though as there will sadly be no more for me to read after that.

The Algebraist reads pretty much like a Culture novel though, maybe just not so high-tech.

If you bump into any Mind Ships on your travels be sure to let me know

meridannight, I am finally, in my dotage, coming to admit that poetry pretty much melts me. I glut myself on prose but poetry makes me stop and do all kinds of things: think, feel, imagine, even visualize.

Have a great time haning out with Aeneas.
