Ender's Game.
#1
Anyone else here a Sci-Fi nut and looking forward to seeing the Ender's Game movie slated to be released this November?

I read the book Ender's Game several years ago and it was one of those really good page turners that you just could not put down. The movie has the chance of being very good in that there are some good names cast for it like Harrison Ford, Ben Kingsley, and Asa Butterfield.

When I first read the book(several times), I thought that it would make a great move, of course there is also the chance that something so good in book form could be very difficult to translate to the screen and not work out. Frank Herbert's Dune would be the first that comes to mind as having a bad transition from book to the screen.

In any case. I'm looking forward to seeing it on the big screen. Anybody else here read the book? or expecting to see the movie?

I am looking forward to "Ender's Game" and hope that it does well. I read it YEARS ago, when it first came out. I am not expecting it to be as good as the book. Movies rarely are. But I am hoping that it does well because I would like for another one of Orson Scott Card's books to become a movie. That book, my favorite work by him, is called "Songmaster". I believe that it is out of print but you might be able to get it on Kindle. I think that it would make an even better movie than "Ender's Game". If you haven't read it, check it out.

I have such mixed feelings about the movie. Will it live up to the book? Should I boycott it because the author is so virulently anti-gay? Can I pay money to see a movie knowing a portion of the profits are going to go to NOM?

I have been looking forward to Ender's game for just over a year, but for a completely diferent reason. Asa Butterfield - ever since I saw 'Boy in the Stripped Pyjama's' I have been fascinated with his acting in roles from Mordred in 'Merlin' to Hugo.

I think he is going to be one of those rare child actors that successfully transition into successful adult actors.

Get the hell out! Tell me that it isn't true! OMG...I just looked it up. You are right. He sits on the board for NOM and is a mormon.

Okay...well there goes that.

Ever since Proposition 8, the Mormon and Catholics have been on my sh!tlist. I personally boycott any and all endeavors where my money can contribute to the welfare of either entity. That means that I don't go to Cinemark theatres and haven't since 2008. I won't support any Catholic charity or organization, no matter how much good they might do, because some of that money gets funneled back to the church itself. I haven't seen any of the Twilight films because I refuse for 10% of MY money to be tithed to the Mormon Church.

Why do I feel so strongly? Because during Proposition 8, the rules of the game changed in this country. These two organizations, who have always preached against us, became aggressively political in trying to subdue us. They succeeded. For the first time in this country's history, civil rights which had been granted to a group of people, were taken away. Since that time I have refused to knowingly support them in any way.

I have friends who think that my position is ludicrous. Quite frankly, I question their intelligence.
If an active member of the KKK opens a burger joint in your neighborhood, would you buy burgers from there knowing that your money is not only supporting the owner, but is also most likely being used to continue the subjugation of human beings? I wouldn't. I couldn't. Yet the LGBT community is being targeted by these two groups and we don't have the common sense to STOP giving our money to them? What the hell? Are we stupid?

By the way, before anyone gets all holier than thou because they belong to either one of those churches, I was born and raised a Catholic. I went to a Jesuit High School. I also studied religion and theology. My partner attended a Catholic monastery and studied to be a priest. This issue has NOTHING to do with the religions themselves, It has to do with civil rights and two church organizations that moved directly into the political arena and successfully bought enough votes to deny civil rights to thousands of Americans. If you aren't pissed by that, then you haven't been paying attention!

Okay...I am stepping off my soapbox now. Sorry about the rant.

I read the book and it's great!

I'm with you on not supporting the author though. I'll probably pirate the movie.

Thanks for the info. I had completely forgotten about that. My mother told me years ago (way before I came out) as we have many gay/lesbian friends.

I don't understand how someone can write something like Ender's Game, which has a anti-genocide topic in it and then deny others of rights by supporting NOM.

I will still go to see the movie (some special effects just cant be appreciated on a small screen. I would rather give $20.00+ dollars to a movie theatre, drink/popcorn included, then fork over $14.00-$19.00 to own the dvd and give more directly towards anything that hurts LGBT's. I will also give a donation to my local LGBT support center to make me feel better.

This is why I have never been to a Chick Fil a restaurant and most likely never will. Although Chick fil a has stopped donating to anti-gay organizations, they still heavily support the Catholic Church, which in turn slams homosexuality.

That's another reason why I wanted to see the movie, was to see Asa Butterfield again. I first saw him in "the Boy with the stripped pajamas" and cried my head off. Fantastic story and an excellent movie, very sad though. Hugo was outstanding as well.

I agree that he'll probably make the jump from childhood to adulthood and continue to be a good actor.
