Getting older......scary thoughts and realizations
#11
i used to fear being alone when older. but i realized that a lot of people, including gays, die alone. so being alone when old is very common nowadays, unfortunately.
i do hope that by the time i am old, they will legalize assisted suicide (euthanasia), so that when i am old enough not to take care of myself, i can get help to find eternal peace.

I'm going to opt out.

If I get to the point where I can't care for myself, I have already decided exactly how I shuffle off the mortal coil. I flat refuse to be a burden to an uncaring society. I know exactly how single people can end up being treated in 'the system' - I have seen enough to know that a bullet to the brain or other opt out options is far easier and more humane than being a ward to the state/society and depending on the 'kindness' of strangers.

Hmmm, me thinks some of you grabbed the wrong end of the stick, as it were.

I wasnt making a point for segregation, I was just asking if there were any such things as gay nursing homes or retirement villages, as I have never heard of any. I mean, come on...with gay bars, gay apartments, gay theater, etc....I would have thought it would be a logical extension. Thats all.

As for just getting older, Im not worried about it at all. It just scares me. I dont dwell on it often, but when I do, all these questions come floating around in my head. And Im one of these people that, once I get a question in my head, it doesnt leave until I get an answer....and it affects my sleep too.

I guess my base point would be.....do you think a "Golden Girls" situation would work?
A big house, with roomies. All there to take care of each other? Do you think anyone would go for this idea, or just want to tough it out on their own?

I think that THAT type of situation (Golden Girls) can work in a commune type setting. Personally, a lot of older people getting together makes sense to me, but just not all in the same house. One of the things that I think elderly people need is the right to their own space- maybe their own apartment, or small cabin. Instead of having only outside caregiver support, each individual could help support the others. It would truly be a radical approach to aging and one which could help to preserve independence and encourage respect. I thought of a senior living environment like that years ago.

Of course they exist. For a price any sort of community living arrangement is available. I am sure such communities have long been available in San Francisco, NYC, and other large cities around the world. I have a friend in Seattle who has looked into such communities, they even have low income facilities there. He is too much of a snob to even consider such an option so???

I certainly, at this moment, want the doctor assisted opt out! Having attempted to help two elderly parents, who both were set up with good finances, and a witch of a sibling... one never understands how quickly - within weeks - a healthy elderly adult can become a nursing home candidate!

Even if you are lucky to find an excellent home and are able to visit daily things go wrong! It is just amazing/horrific... but the same things can go wrong in their own home with falls as mom had a fall and I found her after 8 hours on a cold kitchen floor.

I know, for me, when I cant cycle anymore the time will come to start selling things off, start the world cruise and look for the doc.
