In this MSN news page, the figures for the European Union are still staggering.
60% of the people surveyed answered that they didn't dare hold their partner's hand in public. This figure rose to 75% for gays.
The study was presented in the Hague and was one of the most extensive ones led in Europe on how gays feel in their respective societies.
30% of the 93,000 people surveyed had encountered some form of aggression in the last 5 years, some of them repeatedly. This seemed to happen more often for transgendered people.
The report admitted that such verbal or physical violence started early, often at school, and that even an allegedly banal joke could start a climate of fear for young gays. It seems that it needs to be addressed early and strongly.
