I think with some friendships it's perfectly okay for one person to be the shoulder and the other to be the cryer. Both parties fulfill a need and a reversal of roles probably wouldn't make anyone happy. If you're like me at all (I don't have a large bustling social life (introvert) but I have a few very long-term and intimate friendships), then your friends might know that you trust and appreciate them just by the fact that you choose to spend your time in their company.
But if you're not like me.... gifts are always nice.
