Cougars are thankfully far from being extinct. There are an estimated 2,000+ here in Washington State, and another 3,500 in British Columbia, across the border in Canada. I've seen their tracks while backpacking, but never been lucky enough to see one in the wild.
I have a friend who survived a cougar attack in Canada years ago. She has puncture scars on her shoulder. Attacks on humans are rare. This one was injured and probably was not able to feed normally. It only attacked her after she stumbled and fell while backing away from it.
