Any GOOD gay films?
#1
Can you guys recommend some LGBT films that are actually good? I dunno, maybe it's just because I'm looking in all the wrong places, but the ones I come across all tend to have awful ratings. I search for trailers and movie clips on Youtube, usually coming across clips of sex scenes, and then I look the movie up and it's got like a 20% on Rotten Tomatoes or is so obscure Rotten Tomatoes doesn't even feel the need to collect movie ratings. For example, they said Eating Out 2 was bad. I think to myself, how bad can it really be? So I find it on some Chinese Youtube-like website and ho ho ho-boy, I couldn't even finish it. It was so bad. The one erotic scene I came across on Youtube was the only scene of interest, and that's no good. I'm not looking for porn this time, I'm looking for a good story. The only movie I've watched so far that actually got good ratings on RT is "Weekend". And I thought it was nice. Wasn't a fan of the casual drug use, but whatever. Are there any other movies like this? I found Weekend on Netflix and they've got an LGBT section, but you can never trust Netflix ratings. They could give a movie like Abduction 3.5 stars... >_>

The obvious recommendation is Brokeback Mountain, although you've probably already seen it. I was kind of disappointed when I first saw it, but most people seem to really enjoy it.

If you don't mind animated stuff, there's an anime called 'Wandering Son'. It touches on both homosexuality and gender identity.

I haven't seen it yet, but I know Wong Kar Wai is like the god of the topic of love and sex in movies.

'Happy Together' is apparently a very good movie, by Wong Kar Wai, it's a Hong Kong film about two men who fall in love.

Again, I haven't seen it, but I've seen his other movie 2046, and that was ridiculously well directed, I think it might be one of my favourite movies.

Also, I don't usually trust public rating systems liek rotten tomatoes, especially IMDB. It gave The Prince of Egypt a 6.5 o_O Prince of Egypt was the best animated film ever, pretty much.

It gets its ratings from random people, and a lot of them are kinda stupid.

I like brokeback mountain though i found the opposite of (humbletangerine) that everybody ive spoke to doesnt like it.

Watch "Behind the candelabra" you wont be dissapointed. At its core is a very sweet love story. Though its a bit twisted, and drug use. Michael douglas has redefined himself playing liberace, its an amazing film. Stop being a prune about drugs. Have you ever taken any ??? Is your life so fucking great???

Get Real & Prayers for Bobby... Both excellent films, in my opinion.

One of my favourites is Torch Song Trilogy. It's an older flick, but I still get watery eyes during a couple of the scenes.

I always thought 'Too Wong Foo' as a feel good gay movie.

It always makes me smile at the end. And I always imagine
Blade in drag every time I see Wesley Snipes as Auntie Noxy, haha

Drag Queen vampire slayer, hm.. They should get on that.

I really liked 'Weekend' though, mostly cause there's a good
balance of 'aww' moments, but also it also had a lot of, 'yeah, I know
how that feels' type of moments as well [lol, if that makes sense].

If you liked that, you should look up 'Trick' it's sort of has a similar
story, bit more on the romantic-comedy side. Cute non the less ;]

In my honest opinion most gay movies are either depressing or overly sexual with zero plot. And almost all are low budget and you can tell.

I would like to see a gay movie that is of the same quality as the Sandra Bullock-Katherine Heigl-Kristen Bell type romantic comedies. And the focus not actually be on "being gay", and more so on a funny and interesting plot that just happens to have (non stereotypical) gay characters.

That being said here's a list of the movies I have seen and my quick thoughts on them:

Shelter - My favourite so far. Tastefully done; not much plot but still a sweet movie.
One of those god awful Eating Out movies - Don't do it man it's horrible.
Latter Days - It's kind of slow but once you get into it it's different and quite powerful in message in the end
All Over The Guy - An attempt at a gay romantic comedy but kind of falls short. Plots not very clever.
Were the World Mine - Funny in concept and a few funny moments. Kind of strange lol
The Weekend - On Netflix. Story wasn't about really anything and the love between the characters should not have been as strong as presented in just 2 or 3 days lol. Unrealistic. But it was interesting, sorta.
Boy Culture - About sex really but somewhat interesting. Main character is very attractive haha. Not a riveting selection though.
Muligans - Actually not to bad. Again not amazing but it's sort of tastefully done. I don't have much of an opinion on it.

I'm a bad gay, I haven't even seen Brokeback Mountain so I have no opinion on it lol.

Anything directed by the wonderful Pedro Almodovar (Dark Habits, Women on the verge of a nervous breakdown).
