This might be a silly question. But I don't know much about this sport. When auburn beat Alabama with that one second touchdown....why was he allowed to run all the way across the field when the clock already ran out?? Why didn't the play end and then restart in overtime?

The clock can run down to 0:00 but the play continues until the ball is down (or the ball carrier steps out of bounds) and the refs blow the whistle.
