I like the west coast because im closer to it..

With regards to the debate, i dont think America is used to pertain to South, North and Central, at least in what im used to. We say Americas with an 'S', its different with the one without S since USA is the legit owner of the name America, there must be a reason why they are called Americans, not USA-sians

Drew Wrote:To be fair, Southbiochem, wouldn't you call yourself "Chilean", not "American"? It's true, though, people from the U.S. refer to themselves as "Americans", and it's generally understood (as far as I know?) by folks from around the world that "American" means "being from the United States". He's right, it's vernacular here, and no offense is intended to folks in Central/South America

To be fair Drew. When have I ever discussed the use of the demonym American?

No, I have no big issues with that as American is the official demonym of the citizen of the United States..

my problem is the usage of the name America which belongs to a continent, to refer to a country...THAT is not official nor established, and is a mere customary thing..

 since when?

on account that you're a nice folk, I will get pass that ignorant statement..

I would ask you to go look for the origin of the name America, and then ask you not make statements like that which only boosts bigotry and ignorance amongst some Americans.

Arkansota Wrote:The Democratic Republic of the Congo is another example- People sometimes call it Zaire. That is perfectly valid and acceptable

Arkansota, please if you don't know stuff, stay quiet..

Zaire was the name of that country bewteen 1971 and 1997 under which it was ruled by a dictator..

I assure you if you go to the D.R of Congo and call it Zaire you'll get shot right there..

It really depends on the context, if we are talking about History, America is a name given to the whole region = North South and Central, but through time, the name evolved and it has become a cultural quirk for people from US to call themselves Americans.

I know its not a good thing that they owned the word America but history is evolving over time. And in what I know, when someone says America, it is always about US.

I dont drop the fact that all people from the 2 continents can be considered Americans, I know how it feels on the part of people from other countries in America to be disregarded and I dont encourage any bigotry and ignorance in my post

but in a REALISTIC point of view right now, when a person says, for example, "I wanna go to America" he doesnt mean he want to roam the 2 American continents. He just simply wanna go to US. Again, it might be wrong for some people but it has become a general term to pertain to the US.

Agreed and agreed

I know it's been a term basically snatched by US for itself..that's my whole point...it's wrong

Like I said, I know you a bit to know you're a nice guy, Evan

I simply stated than a certain type of Americans are already bigoted, rude and on the stance that "US owns the world" (definitely not all of them, of course) and you ouright saying something so incredibly inaccurate as "USA is the legit owner of the name America" only encourages these behaviors

Peace now!

You took the words out of my mouth, it is a word snatched by the US, and over time it already became a general idea that US and America are the same. Right now, its just that America is pretty much always pertains to US itself. But I am not disregarding other countries in the continent to be part of America.

I don't mean to offend any people here..

I'm not talking about MERICA! here I'm talking about Kiwi Land>
Our west coast of teh south island is beautiful you turn a corner and it's raining and the next it's sunny and it's full of lush forests and windy coastal roads. It also has rocks with blow holes which is pretty cool and waterfalls from off high up mountains.
It just a lush lovely place.
