The Story Game

adam was the first to see it, he slowed his bike to a crawl and pulled up on the hard shoulder in a spray of dust, a moment later morris was beside him, his engine still idling, "what the hell is it" he said turning to face his friend, adam didn't like the tremor he heard in his voice, wasn't morris meant to be the tough one... the one who looked out for them, lately he wasn't so sure.. "a cow" even as he spoke the words he wasn't so sure of there truth, the thing that stood in the middle of road lifted its head at the exact same moment the mayor was...

biting into its neck. The docile beast bellowed and pulled away, a spurt of blood staining its glossy white coat. The mayor focused his wild gaze on the boys. A trickle of perspiration bled his garish make-up. He smiled. Pink teeth exaggerated by rouged lips…

...he couldn’t comprehend the reality he was seeing. A bad Hollywood gore film. B-movies at their best. After regaining his stability, the mayor walked forward, reaching up with a tube of what appeared to be lipstick in his hands. Adam dodged his swipe, knocking his bike into Morris’. The mayor grinned, swaying back as if to once again lose balance. Morris let out his own uneasy chuckle at the spectacle.
“You boys… clowns… red… disguise…” the mayor stuttered.
“Who you calling clown –“ Morris was cut-off by Adam…

"Watch out" but it was too late, the mayor moved fast in an exaggarated sweeping motion he swung his arm out leaving a bright red dash down the side of morris’s face with the lipstick thing, the mayor moved so fast he couldnt stop his own momentum and after a couple of theatrical attempts to find his balance he muttered "uh-oh" and landed in a heap on the floor... back at the town hall miss penfold..

…had crawled away from the tangle of shrieking people and quietly crept into the canteen. She hugged her legs to her chest as she sat propped against the counter. She attempted to bring her laboured breathing under control. Outside the thin walls, the shrieking had reached fever pitch… then silence. Silence echoed about the hall louder than the last dying scream. The void had been filled with dread. She knew she had to act fast, and precious moments were slipping away…

She got shakily to her feet and remembered there was a back entrance in the small kitchen behind the canteen, walking with one hand along the counter, almost paralyzed with fear, she found the door and half expected it to be locked, but it gave easily and the first thing that struck her was the ghastly stench, for a moment she swayed on her feet, from the hall a quite chanting began, miss penfold came to and moved further into the gloomy kitchen, the chanting became louder and she tried desperately to recall where the exit door was, she could hardly see a thing and the fear was clouding her thinking, in one corner a large...

… chest freezer sat, it’s bulk barely visible in the shadow. As her eyes focused, she remembered that the door was just beyond. She removed her heels and silently hurried forward, the cool tile floor sending yet more chills up her spine. She fumbled for the handle – it didn’t turn! Of course, she muttered to herself, it would be locked. She regained what composer she could force and carefully popped the lock, wincing as it made an audible click in the silent gloom…

she pushed the door out and a blast of cold air hit her, strange as it had been warm & humid all week and the forecast was the same, heart beating she pushed the door shut and stepped into the frigid night, she could still hear the chanting out here, it was fainter but the outer walls seemed to reverberate with it, they were saying that name, the one the clown had said "klownahelem" over and over again, miss penfold could make out some of her own friends and neighbours voices in the sickening chorus, there was something else too, something that didnt...

sound ordinary. A dull continuous roar hung ominously in the air, just barely perceptible above the chanting. Colours? Colours! The ground was littered with confetti. It still rained down. Miss Penfold slowly lifted her bewildered gaze towards the sky. Her pale grey eyes widened in horror as she focused on a bizarre cloud. It shimmered randomly as if neon lightening erupted behind the wispy curtain. Her heart turned to lead in her chest. Her throat tightened, and she failed to restrain a sob. Tears spilled from her own cloudy eyes.
She began to shiver, breaking the spell, and remembered what had happened. She stepped onto the sidewalk feeling something squish underfoot. She looked down, her feet ankle deep in the colourful carpet, and silently thanked God that she could not see what she had just stepped in. Determined, she looked up and continued to move forward…
